Human Sanctuary

A Sanctuary for Animals—and the People Who Love Them

Beauties of the Beasts is a reptile-focused rescue and human sanctuary built on one conviction: animals and the people who love them belong together. We provide real education, real resources, and safe refuge for reptiles and the families who care for them—especially when a lost job, a medical bill, or a crisis threatens to take an animal away. No one should have to give up a beloved animal simply because they need help.

Why We Do This

Almost no one surrenders an animal because they stopped loving it. They surrender because life got hard—a lost job, a medical bill, a sudden move, a crisis nobody saw coming. Yuma sees more than its share of financial hardship, unemployment, and housing instability, and a reptile or companion animal is often the first thing a struggling family feels forced to give up.

We started as a reptile rescue, and reptile rescue is still at the center of everything we do. But we kept seeing the same pattern, intake after intake: families who loved their animals but didn't have the support to keep them. So we built the Human Sanctuary to close that gap.

Give a family resources, knowledge, stability, and someone willing to help—and fewer animals get surrendered. It's that direct.

We're honest about what we are and aren't. We are not a homeless shelter, a domestic-violence shelter, a licensed social-service agency, a veterinary clinic, a law firm, or a mental-health provider. We are a nonprofit that connects people to real help, shows up with practical support when we can, and keeps animals with the families who love them whenever that's possible.

Where we're headed

Right now, the Human Sanctuary runs out of the same home base as our rescue work—because that's what we have. We're actively working to secure a dedicated building: a real space for consultations, workshops, and supply distribution that isn't limited by our animal quarantine capacity, and that lets the rest of our rescue work grow alongside it. Every gift and every partnership moves that date closer. See everything a facility unlocks →

How We Help

When resources and capacity allow, here's what the Human Sanctuary puts to work for your family:

Animal-care education

Husbandry guidance and responsible-ownership support for reptiles and other exotic companion animals.

Surrender-prevention support

Practical help when resources and capacity allow, so a hardship doesn't have to mean giving up an animal.

Care-resource support

Pet food, reptile food, habitat supplies, or basic care items when we have them available.

Resource navigation & referrals

Help finding employment resources, job training, digital skills, housing resources, food assistance, and other local services.

Community education

Workshops and future self-sufficiency programming, developed as capacity allows.

Compassionate support

Volunteer opportunities, community outreach, and a listening ear—without judgment.

Keep Families Together

Unemployment, a medical emergency, domestic violence, housing instability, financial hardship—none of that should cost a family their animal. Before surrender becomes the only option, we go looking for another way: education, practical assistance, or a connection to the right resource.

Sometimes that's reptile food or supplies to get through a rough month. Sometimes it's answering the husbandry question that's causing the stress in the first place. Sometimes it's pointing someone to a local program that takes just enough pressure off to keep the animal home. Every situation is different, and support is case-by-case, based on available space and resources—but we start from the same place every time: how do we keep this family together?

Skills for Stable Families

Stable families build stable homes for animals. It's that simple. Through digital-skills support, job-readiness assistance, community education, and referrals to trusted local partners, we help community members build confidence, open up opportunities, and take real steps toward self-sufficiency.

That's no longer just a goal — it's live. We've been approved to offer real career and digital-skills training directly through Grow with Google, including full Google Career Certificate cohorts. Here's what's open right now:

Beauties of the Beasts is not a college, school, employment agency, or guaranteed job-placement provider—we connect community members to trusted training and workforce partners.
